The Clinton Vision - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Noam Chomsky Bill Clinton assumed the Presidency of the United States heralded as a New Democrat. He would do things differently. He wouldn't kowtow to powerful lobbies. He would break the bureaucratic gridlock. After a year in office - a Clinton vision has taken shape. Its lenses and frames suggest that it's business as usual in Washington. President Clinton has fervently embraced and promoted programs and policies such as NAFTA and GATT that will exacerbate social and economic polarization in the US and abroad. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1993) Noam Chomsky is one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era. A renowned professor at MIT for more than four decades - he has been honored with numerous awards and degrees. He was one of the first to speak out against the Vietnam War and is known the world over for his trenchant critiques of U.S. foreign policy and the media. For many he is a symbol of resistance to tyranny and the depredations of private and state power. Few people are more astute in decoding the realities of globalization. He was named in by Utne Reader as one of the top 100 visionaries in the world. Utne says - ''Chomsky knows who's powerful - who's abusing their power - and what they and we should do about it. Over the years he's managed to provoke left and right through his relentless critiques of US foreign policy and culture.'' The New Statesman calls him - ''the conscience of the American people.'' Rolling Stone magazine says - ''Chomsky has been unrelenting in his attacks on the American hierarchy ... he is up there with Thoreau and Emerson in the literature of rebellion.'' A recent survey ranked Professor Chomsky as the most cited living author. He is in such demand as a public speaker that he is booked years in advance - and everywhere he goes he draws overflow audiences. He is the author of scores of books - including Class Warfare - Powers and Prospects - The Common Good - The New Military Humanism and Propaganda and the Public Mind. US Human Rights Policy: Rhetoric and Practice - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Noam Chomsky December 10 - 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the seminal human rights document. The US stresses human rights in its foreign policy; however - its application is selective. Abuses in - say - Saudi Arabia - are ignored - while those in Cuba are the focus of much attention. In October 1997 - Amnesty International issued a report charging the US criminal justice system with a persistent and widespread pattern of human rights violations. Doing Democracy: The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements : GlobalExchange : US$16.95

by Bill Moyer with JoAnn McAllister - Mary Lou Finley and Steven Soifer contributions by Nancy Gregory and Juliette Beck Citizen activism has achieved many positive results. But the road to success for social movements is often complex - usually lasting many years - with few guides for evaluating the precise stage of a movement's evolution to determine the best way forward. One week the news will be alive with stories of thousands of people in the streets; the next week - the thousands are gone. But has the movement withered and died ? or has it just changed shape? Through understanding and analyzing social movements - Doing Democracy shows that the apparent ups and downs of a movement generally follow a pattern - which can be used to plan and carry out social action that is even more effective. Beginning with an overview of social movement theory and the MAP (Movement Action Plan) model - Doing Democracy outlines the eight typical stages of social movements - the four roles of activists - and case studies from the civil rights - anti-nuclear energy - Central America - gay/lesbian - women's health (breast cancer) - and globalization movements. Doing Democracy will appeal to social movement activists and organizations working on all issues - as well as to academics in a variety of disciplines ranging from political science - sociology - and peace studies - through women studies and the various courses in social work schools. Accessibly written - it will also be of interest to all those interested in better understanding the social movements they hear about in the daily media. (227 pages - 2001) Bill Moyer has spent more than 40 years as a full-time theorist - writer - organizer - consultant - educator and participant in social movements focused on a wide-variety of issues on three continents. The originator of the MAP Model - Moyer has given training courses and workshops to over 20 - 000 people. JoAnn McAllister is a social action researcher and consultant to community-based organizations - who has been active in social movements for 25 years. Mary Lou Finley is a sociologist at Antioch University in Seattle - and a long-time activist. Steven Soifer has been involved in local - national and international social movements and teaches at the University of Maryland - Baltimore. Nancy Gregory is a former student of Steven Soifer. This is a revised vesion of a paper she wrote while a student in Soifer's Social Work and Social Action Class. Juliette Beck is the coordinator of the Global Democracy Project for Global Exchange where she focuses especially on the international movement against corporate globalization of the political economic system.

Episode 2: Energy : GlobalExchange : US$25.00

A special series from The World Summit on Sustainable Development - featuring: Ben Cashdan (Down to Earth Presenter) Bobby Peek (Groundwork - South Africa) Jaqueline Aloisi De Larderel (Assistant Executive Director - United Nations Environment Programme - Paris) Steve Lennon (MD for Resources & Energy - Eskom - South Africa) Steven Sawyer (Climate Change Campaign - Green Peace International) The sun is the source of energy for every living cell. Beneath the ground - its energy is stored in vast reserves of coal - oil and gas. These fossil fuels were the driving forces of the industrial revolution. But as we race to extract and burn - it is increasingly accepted that greenhouse gases are causing irreversible damage to our planet. Global warming has the potential to render whole countries uninhabitable as glaciers melt and oceans rise. It is those who are energy-poor who are most at risk from this environmental damage. Two billion people live without a connection to the grid. Often they live in polluted areas using unsafe and unclean energy. In an era of Enron & Worldcom can we leave business to police itself? How much extravagant consumption can the planet sustain? Finally - how far have we come since Rio de Janeiro ?? were our commitments to protect the planet no more than hot air? Globalization: The New Face of Capitalism - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Noam Chomsky Globalization is hailed by the pundits as an irresistible natural force. It's like gravity - they say. Just accept it and go on with your life. A contrary view says this international economic order is nothing more than old wine in a new bottle. Powerful transnational institutions like the World Trade Organization - the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are the main instruments and implementors of globalization. Nations and communities trying to maintain sovereignty - protect human rights and preserve the environment are under attack as they confront the latest version of capitalism. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1999) Noam Chomsky is one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era. The Greening of Cuba : GlobalExchange : US$30.00

The Greening of Cuba profiles Cuban farmers and scientists working to reinvent a sustainable agriculture - based on ecological principles and local knowledge rather than imported agricultural inputs. In their quest for self sufficiency - Cubans combine time-tested traditional methods with cutting edge bio-technology. When trade relations with the socialist bloc collapsed in 1990 - Cuba lost 80 percent of its pesticide and fertilizer imports and half its petroleum--the mainstays of its highly industrialized agriculture. Challenged with growing food for 11 million in the face of the continuing US embargo - Cuba embarked on the largest conversion to organic farming ever attempted. Told in the voices of the women and men--the campesino - researchers - and organic gardeners--who are leading the organic agriculture movement - The Greening of Cuba reminds us that developed and developing nations alike can choose a healthier environment and still feed their people. (VHS - Spanish with English Subtitles - 38 minutes - 1996) For more information - visit Global Exchange's Cuba Campaign.

US Policy in Latin America - Birns : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Larry Birns Henry Stimson once referred to Latin America as our little region over here which has never bothered anybody. He wasn't kidding. The influence of the United States in Latin America is overwhelming - much more so than in the rest of the world. Obvious consequences flow from that. Under the umbrella of the Monroe Doctrine - the US has invaded Mexico - Grenada - Panama and the Dominican Republic. It supported coups in Guatemala - Chile and Brazil. It has financed wars and sabotage in Nicaragua and Cuba. From the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego - the colossus of the North dominates the South. Latin America's function is to provide raw materials - cheap labor and markets. Independent development is not tolerated. The recently-concluded NAFTA and GATT will accelerate the region's deteriorating conditions. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1993) Larry Birns is the Director of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in Washington - DC. He is the editor of that organization's bi-weekly publication - The Washington Report on the Hemisphere. He is a frequent guest on national and international news programs. His articles regularly appear in leading newspapers - journals and magazines.

The Global Activist's Manual: Local Ways to Change the World : GlobalExchange : US$15.95

Edited by Mike Prokosch and Laura Raymond Introduction by Naomi Klein The Global Activist's Manual is a guide to transforming the corporate globalization movement. Three dozen authors look beyond the spectacular shutdowns and protests to introduce the reader to farmers in Iowa - industrial workers in Tennessee - and anti-sweatshop activists in Maine who are connecting global injustices to the issues in their own front yards. The authors range from movement ''stars'' to the unsung heroes who are challenging the world's largest corporations. This is a refreshing antidote to naysayers in the mainstream media who say there is no alternative to the current system. Activists will find practical organizing ideas supplemented by a how-to section on effective media work - fundraising - and organizing. Students and teachers can use these case studies as material for classroom analysis. Case studies describe how global and local activists have joined forces and ''localized globalization'' while working for labor rights - immigrant rights - and the environment. The book ends with a ''Movement Yellow Pages'' linking the many causes in the globalization movement. (324 pages - 2002) Mike Prokosch is the Global Coordinator for United for a Fair Economy and creator of UFE's Globalization for Beginners workshop - which he has led for thousands of people all over the US. Laura Raymond works on prison reform in northern California. Got the globalization blues? Read this savvy guide to global activism and read it today. It could change your life and - believe it or not - help you make history. ? Charles Derber - author of Corporation Nation

The World Bank & IMF: 50 Years is Enough - Kennedy : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Danny Kennedy The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund together have more power to influence development in the Third World than do any other institutions on the planet. For the last fifty years - tens of billions of dollars have been loaned to the poorest nations with the ostensible purpose of improving their quality of life. The net result - in most cases - has been disastrous. World Bank and IMF practices often usurp local development priorities. Staggering levels of debt burden countries already poor. The gulf between the privileged few and those clinging to survival has widened. World Bank projects and IMF-imposed structural adjustment programs displace millions of people and devastate the environment. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1994) Danny Kennedy became an environmental activist in his native Australia at the age of twelve when he participated in a movement that stopped the construction of a large dam. He is a founder of Project Underground - the Berkeley-based organization that works with indigenous communities threatened by the mining and oil industries. He is a producer for Australian Public Radio and a member of the Action for Solidarity and Equality in Environment and Development.

The WTO: Five Years of Reasons to Resist Corporate Globalization : GlobalExchange : US$5.95

By Lori Wallach - Michelle Sforza Introduction by Ralph Nader Why is a global movement growing against the WTO? When you cut through the corporate propaganda about the benefits of globalization and really look at the 5-year track record of the WTO what you'll find is a slow motion coup d'etat - a low intensity war waged to redefine free society-democracy and its non-commercial health - safety and other protections-as subordinate to the dictates of big business. In the US - if we do not make the connection between our local problems and the corporate drive for economic and political control - then others will be blamed for these unavoidable and increasing problems. It's the immigrants! It's the welfare system! It's greedy farmers or workers! It's the regulatory agencies! Allowing such camouflage of the real causes of our problems means massive diversion of our focus - dividing people against each other to the further benefit of mega-corporations. Thus - what we face now is a race against time: How can citizens most effectively mobilize a reversal of the expanding corporatized globalization agenda while we defend our democratic spaces - instincts and institutions from further assault? Step one: read this pamphlet and pass it on. -Ralph Nader (80 pages - 1999) For more information - visit Global Exchange's WTO campaign.

The Case Against War With Iraq - Zunes : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Stephen Zunes Addressing troops at Ft. Hood - Texas - President Bush warned - The Iraqi regime is a grave threat to the United States. The drums of war are beating loudly for an attack on Iraq. The reserves have been called up. Carrier battle groups are in place. The US is anticipating an 18-month occupation that will involve a heavy American military presence and a quick takeover of Iraqi oil fields. Beyond the rhetoric and gunship diplomacy - Bush has not made the case that a major invasion of Iraq is necessary. Historian and longtime peace activist Howard Zinn says - A war against Iraq has no logical connection to the tragic events of 9/11. We have a right to wonder if the motive for war is not stopping terrorism but expanding US power and controlling Mideast oil. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2002) Stephen Zunes is a specialist on the Middle East. His articles appear in leading journals and magazines. He teaches at the University of San Francisco and is director of its Peace & Justice Studies Program. He also chairs the Middle East Task Force for the interfaith Fellowship of Reconciliation.

Noam Chomsky: 9-11 : GlobalExchange : US$8.95

In 9-11 Noam Chomsky examines the root causes of the September 11th catastrophe - the historical precedents for it - and the possible outcomes as the world moves forward into the post-September 11 reality. For Chomsky - the atrocities of 9-11 ''are something quite new in world affairs - '' marking the first time since 1812 that the US mainland was attacked (an important distinction from Pearl Harbor - which was US territory - but effectively a colony). As Chomsky writes - ''in the past half century particularly - [the US] resorted to force throughout much of the world? For the first time - the guns have been directed the other way. That is a dramatic change.'' Chomsky believes that the attacks have been harmful in ways that extend far beyond the initial death toll and ongoing national emergency. For example - he believes they represent ''a devastating blow'' to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Most importantly and provocatively - Chomsky argues that in the world after 9-11 - it is no longer possible to hold our enemies to one standard - ourselves to another. Chomsky argues for an international rule of law; existing bodies such as the UN and World Court must be given credence and then relied upon. ''React with extreme violence - '' he writes - ''and expect to escalate the cycle of violence - leading to still further atrocities such as the one that is inciting the call for revenge.'' But if the goal is to reduce the probability of further atrocities - then rather follow lawful procedure - presenting the evidence and letting independent world bodies direct the appropriate response. As for why the attack happened - Chomsky writes that ''this question is rarely raised in a serious way.'' And he adds - ''To refuse to face this question is to choose to increase significantly the probability of further crimes of this kind.'' In 9-11 - Noam Chomsky's comments on the September 11th attacks - the new war on terrorism - Osama bin Laden - US involvement with Afghanistan - media control - and the long-term implications of America's military attacks abroad. Informed by his deep understanding of the gravity of these issues and the global stakes - 9-11 demonstrates Chomsky's impeccable knowledge of US foreign policy in the Middle East and South Asia - and sheds light on the rapidly shifting balance of world power. Speaking out against escalating violence - Chomsky critically examines the United States' own foreign policy record and considers what international institutions might be employed against underground networks and national states accused of terrorism. Noam Chomsky is a world renowned political activist - writer - and professor of linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology - where he has taught since 1955. Chomsky has written and lectured widely on linguistics - philosophy - and politics. Among his works are: Powers and Prospects; World Orders - Old and New; Deterring Democracy; Manufacturing Consent (with ES Herman); Year 501: The Conquest Continues; Profit Over People; The New Military Humanism; Rogue States; and A New Generation Draws the Line. Chomsky's efforts for greater democracy are celebrated by peace and social justice movements worldwide. Simultaneous publication in Australia - Brazil - France - Germany - Greece - Holland - India - Italy - Japan - Korea - Norway - Portugal - Russia - Sweden - South Africa - Spain - Taiwan - and Turkey. To capture the cutting edge of that conversation - AlterNet has released After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World. The well-rounded collection of 42 articles untangles the knot of our new post-9/11 landscape - tackling every subject from civil liberties to Islamic fundamentalism to economics to sex. ''After 9/11 answers the once-unanswerable questions and envisions a once-unimaginable future - '' says AlterNet's executive editor Don Hazen. ''Its essays provide the context people need to understand how the terrorist attacks have changed their individual lives and what every one of us can do to prevent future attacks.'' An American Addiction: Drugs - Guerillas - Counterinsurgency - US Intervention In Colombia - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$13.98

Noam Chomsky Colombia has been the leading recipient of US arms and training in the Western Hemisphere through the 1990s. It has also had the worst human rights record by far in the Western Hemisphere during these years. That correlation is one of the best correlations in contemporary history.... It's a very important correlation that should be known and understood by the people who are paying for it. That?s us. And it will get worse. [Noam Chomsky - from the CD] Clinton's last act as President was to authorize $1.7 billion in military aid to Colombia. Bush has already added almost another billion dollars. In a clear - concise - and sometimes bitterly funny lecture - Noam Chomsky shows us who is getting the money - who is producing and exporting the drugs - and what the war on the ground is really about. ''There's an official story having to do with the so-called Drug War. That's not taken seriously by any competent analyst....The Drug Enforcement Agency issued a major report about a year ago in which they pointed out that at every level of the Colombian government there?s direct and extensive involvement in narcotrafficking. That includes the military. That includes the paramilitaries. In fact - the paramilitaries have announced publicly that 70% of their funding comes from narcotrafficking. That's where the antidrug money is going.'' ''If you make it impossible for peasants to survive - and when they produce the only thing they can produce to feed their children - and then you go after them with biological and chemical weapons and gunships - they?re going to do deeper into the Amazon - cross the border in Ecuador and grow more drugs. The narcotraffickers and the military will gain. That's more or less the same people. The small number of landowners who have taken over most of the wealth of the country are going to gain.....That?s the result of the Colombia plan.'' (52 minute CD) (Same speech as the audio tape An American Addiction: Drugs - Guerillas - Counterinsurgency - US Intervention In Colombia). (audio CD - 60 minutes - 2000)

Renewable Energy - Nader : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Ralph Nader Renewable energy may be the key to a sustainable planetary future - yet it is barely a topic for public discussion. Fuel economy and energy efficiency are distant memories. With low gas prices - few are thinking about alternatives to fossil fuels. Ford's new entrant into the booming sport utility vehicle market is the Excursion. It is 19 feet long and gets 10 miles per gallon. The quest for short-term profit comes at the expense of long-term harm to the environment. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1998) Ralph Nader has spent a lifetime fighting on behalf of ordinary people - and few Americans have the respect and prestige that he commands. Life magazine ranks him as one of the country's most influential Americans of the twentieth century. Founder of Public Citizen - he is a long-time advocate for consumer safety and workers' rights. He rose to fame in the 1960s when he took on General Motors and its unsafe Corvair car. His 1965 book Unsafe At Any Speed not only created a sensation but was instrumental in the enactment of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. He helped create the Environmental Protection Agency. He has exposed the misdeeds of the corporate sector as well as of the political system. He is perhaps best known for Nader's Raiders and for sparking debate on issues ranging from the Corvair to the Dalkon Shield. In recent years he has led the struggles around NAFTA - the WTO and corporate welfare. In 1996 he was the Green Party presidential candidate - and in 2000 he is their candidate again.

Rethinking Development - Norberg-Hodge : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Helena Norberg-Hodge Development is generally regarded as a good thing. It is often equated with progress. The prevailing pattern of development is the model to be emulated. The global economy is propelled by a relentless drive toward more exploitation of resources - more technological innovation - more markets and more profits. Consumerism is the dominant mindset. Development is its mantra. The world as refracted through this ideological prism is a kind of pie. There are questions of tactics as to how to cut it up. The First World - with the largest knives and a voracious appetite - cuts itself the most generous pieces. Everyone else scrambles for the crumbs. Helena Norberg-Hodge has examined and critiqued conventional notions of development. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1992) Helena Norberg-Hodge - a linguist by training and a native of Sweden - was educated in Europe and the United States. She is a leading critic of conventional notions of growth and development. In 1975 - she went to Ladakh - in the northwestern Himalayas in India. Three years later she founded the Ladakh Project - with the goal of providing Ladakhis with the means to make more informed choices about their own future. Her work has received wide support and recognition. She is the author of Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh. Founder and Director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture - she received the Right Livelihood Award - also known as the alternative Nobel Prize.

Rethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World : GlobalExchange : US$18.95

Edited by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson Globalization. The word speaks to our growing interconnectedness: North American teenagers wearing sneakers made in China - South Americans watching US television - the internet flashing messages across continents. But this is only a partial view of the global village. We are all connected - but in very unequal ways - in ways that pose dire threats to the health of the planet. Those sneakers are made by poor women in sweatshops. Child labor is on the rise. The unabated production of greenhouse gases is causing global warming - which threatens virtually all life on earth. Many governments spend more on interest payments to global bankers than on health and education of their people. Rethinking Globalization alerts readers to the challenges we face - and also spotlights the enormous courage and creativity of groups and individuals working to set things right. Through numerous role plays - interviews - poems - stories - background readings - cartoons - and hands-on teaching activities - Rethinking Globalization offers a memorable introduction to the forces that are shaping the future of our world. (Rethinking Schools Press - 394 pages - 2002) Rethinking Globalization is a breathtakingly rich collection of essays - photos - cartoons - poems - providing an extraordinary one-volume education on wealth - poverty - corporate power - and popular resistance in the contemporary world. The book is both a delight to read and a treasury of ideas and information. I can think of no other book that teaches so much - so engagingly. I will keep it very handy. -- Howard Zinn - author of A People's History of the United States For more information - visit Global Exchange's Economic Rights campaigns.

Noam Chomsky Recorded at the Right of Return conference at Boston University in April 2000. Noam Chomsky - Ilan Pappe and Robert Fisk take on different aspects of the explosive issue of the Palestinians' quest to return to their homes. Chomsky has long been involved in the Israeli-Palestinian question. Pappe is one of Israel's leading radical voices and part of the New Historian's movement - which is decoding many of the Zionist myths. Fisk - the Beirut-based correspondent for The Independent - is noted for his candor and straight-ahead writing style. (two audio cassettes - 120 minutes - 2000) Noam Chomsky is one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era. A renowned professor at MIT for more than four decades - he has been honored with numerous awards and degrees. He was one of the first to speak out against the Vietnam War and is known the world over for his trenchant critiques of U.S. foreign policy and the media. He was named in by Utne Reader as one of the top 100 visionaries in the world. Utne says - ''Chomsky knows who's powerful - who's abusing their power - and what they and we should do about it. Over the years he's managed to provoke left and right through his relentless critiques of US foreign policy and culture.'' The New Statesman calls him - ''the conscience of the American people.'' Rolling Stone magazine says - ''Chomsky has been unrelenting in his attacks on the American hierarchy ... he is up there with Thoreau and Emerson in the literature of rebellion.'' Target Iraq - Ritter : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Scott Ritter The US is holding military aid hostage - and for ransom they want immunity in the International Criminal Court. This deal - proctered by Bush - would halt military aid to countries unless they agree not to use the Court to try Americans for war crimes. The International Criminal Court - known as the ICC - was created to try individuals accused of war crimes - genocide - and crimes against humanity in order to bring criminals to justice and deter future atrocities. Bush's unprecedented unsigning of the ICC treaty keeps the US Government on track with its policy of so-called full-spectrum dominance. - officially defined as the ability of US forces operating alone or with allies - to defeat any adversary and control any situation across the range of military operations. There is no better example of unilateral US policies that lead to ever more animosity than our current trajectory in Iraq. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2002) Scott Ritter was a Marine intelligence officer during the Gulf War. He then became a weapons inspector for the UN from 1991 to 1998 - at which point he resigned in protest because of its lack of effectiveness. He declared: the illusion of arms control is more dangerous than no arms control at all. He produced the documentary In Shifting Sands which detailed the weapons inspection program during his 7 year tenure. Ritter is the author of Endgame: Solving the Iraqi Problem Once and For All.

Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower : GlobalExchange : US$18.95

With a special post 9-11 update: What has the US done to provoke such hatred? by William Blum From the Update to this new edition: ...on September 11 - 2001 - four planes were hijacked and terrorists proceeded to carry out the most devastating attack on American soil in the history of the United States. The physical destruction and personal suffering caused by the attacks has been immense. In addition to punishing the perpetrators who are still alive - we must not allow the event to pass without deriving important lessons from it. Clearly - the most important lesson to be learned is the answer to the question Why? There is a chapter in this book entitled: Why Do Terrorists Keep Picking on the United States? - which argues that - terrorists - whatever else they might be - might also be rational human beings; which is to say that in their own minds they have a rational justification for their actions. Most terrorists are people deeply concerned by what they see as social - political - or religious injustice and hypocrisy - and the immediate grounds for their terrorism is often retaliation for an action of the United States... This is followed by a lengthy list of such US actions in the Middle East - which took many lives - from the bombing of Lebanon and Libya to the sinking of an Iranian ship; from the shooting down of an Iranian passenger plane and the massive bombing of the Iraqi people to the bombing of Sudan and Afghanistan and the habitual support of Israel despite the devastation and routine torture it commits against the Palestinian people... It was perhaps hoping for too much that after the attack American leaders - the media - or the public would look into the terrorism question from this angle with any kind of seriousness. Instead - as usual - the terrorists were depicted as little more than evil monsters - or insane - or motivated by religious fanaticism at best; with little or no hint that they were retaliating for things done to them... A few years ago - journalist Alan Nairn wrote that with the end of the Cold War - the United States wields powers that no nation should have. It can go anywhere and kill anyone. Only the American public can hold Washington back. Only if the American people stand between the bombers and the bombed. If there's to be any hope of the American public ever performing this role - their consciences and intellects will have to be awakened. To this end - this book has gathered in one place the many deeds of American foreign policy of the past half century which increasingly have earned the US government the enmity of people in every corner of the world. - William Blum - September 19 - 2001 Whatever we think we know about US foreign policy - Rogue State makes it clear that we don't know nearly enough. This book's grisly content may seem to require a strong stomach - but reading its words is nothing compared to what has been done -- and keeps being done -- with our tax dollars and in our names. Whether we read Rogue State as a historical narrative or use it as a reference book - William Blum has put together a horrifying and infuriating piece of work. The footnoted information between these covers is enough to make any awake reader want to scream with rage. This is a truly subversive book because it demolishes the foundations of basic illusions about the United States of America as a world power. --Norman Solomon - author and winner of the George Orwell Award For more information - visit Global Exchange's Afghanistan - Colombia - Iraq - and Palestine Campaigns. A Day in the Life of a Free Country ... or ... How Does the United States Get Away With It? (308 pages - 2000) William Blum left the State Department in 1967 - abandoning his aspiration of becoming a Foreign Service Officer - because of his opposition to what the United States was doing in Vietnam. He then became one of the founders and editors of the Washington Free Press - the first underground newspaper in the capital. In 1969 - he wrote and published an expose of the CIA in which was revealed the names and addresses of more than 200 employees of the Agency. Mr. Blum has been a freelance journalist in the United States - Europe and South America. His stay in Chile in 1972-73 - writing about the Allende government's socialist experiment - and then its tragic overthrow in a CIA-designed coup - instilled in him a personal involvement and an even more heightened interest in what his government was doing in various corners of the world. In the mid-1970s - he worked in London with former CIA officer Philip Agee and his associates on their project of exposing CIA personnel and their misdeeds. In 1999 - he was one of the recipients of Project Censored's awards for exemplary journalism for writing one of the top ten censored stories of 1998 - an article on how - in the 1980s - the United States gave Iraq the material to develop a chemical and biological warfare capability. William Blum is also the author of Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II.

We Need to Go to School: Voices of the Rugmark Children : GlobalExchange : US$15.95

compiled by Tanya Roberts-Davis In their own words and drawings - Nepalese children talk about their early years in poverty-stricken villages - their work as virtual slaves in carpet factories in Kathmandu - and how they felt when they were given a chance to attend school and pursue their dreams for the future. These children vividly remember the day their lives changed for the better ? the day a Rugmark inspector came into the factory and asked them whether they wanted to go to school. The children describe their fear of the unknown - the loneliness of being taken to a school where they knew no one - and finally the joy of having what North American children take for granted: sufficient food - clean water - the opportunity to learn - the time to play - and the chance to fulfill dreams for the future. (48 pages - 2001 - B&W photos and illustrations throughout - Maps) In 1999 - 16-year-old Tanya Roberts-Davis traveled to Nepal - where she lived with former child carpet weavers. During that time - she collected the children's poems - drawings and stories - which she has assembled in this book. Tanya has been a children's advocate since she started raising money for Oxfam in primary school. ''This is one of the most moving and gripping books on child labor that it's been my privilege to read. The beautiful web of stories and poetry reveals - with unexpected emotive power - both the tales of horror and the abiding hope of the Rugmark children. The simplicity of expression takes one's breath away - the love for education is extraordinarily powerful - the illustrations are evocative - and the introductory narrative puts it all in context. It is said that the book is for children nine to fourteen: don't believe it. This is a book for everyone.'' -- Stephen Lewis (former Deputy Director of UNICEF) For more information - visit Global Exchange's Fair Trade Campaigns.

Increasingly - doctors - therapists - and body workers are discovering the beneficial aspects of these herbs. Smudge bundles are one of the means by which people around the globe are reconnecting with the power of Mother Nature. The use of plant and resin smoke possibly evolved out of the primordial campfires from distant caves. The ceremony of cleansing people - places - and objects through smoke is continued today. Not only good for keeping pesky flying insects away - certain plant smokes (smudges) could preserve food and hides. Some smudges could also impart protection from unseen spirits and thoughts. To apply the protective cleansing power of a smudge - a leaf or resin was heated to make smoke that was brushed over the person or object often with a feather fan. Some plant smokes had specific healing properties while others had more generic powers. The smudge smoke is made either by spreading dry herbs on hot coals or hot rocks or igniting dry hers in a clay bowl or shell.

Jenin Jenin : GlobalExchange : US$29.99

'Where is God - ' an elderly man desperately wonders when surveying the debris in the Palestinian refugee camp Jenin. The film - directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor and director Mohammed Bakri - includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's Defensive Wall operation - during which the city and camp were the scenes of fierce fighting. The operation ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead. Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the April 2002 attack on the refugee camp. ''Jenin Jenin'' shows the extent to which the prolonged oppression and terror has affected the state of mind of the Palestinian inhabitants of Jenin. Bitterness and grief are the prevailing feelings among the majority of the population. Many have lost loved ones or are still searching for victims and furniture among the debris. A little girl - who does not seem to be much older than twelve - tells her story but knows no fear. The ongoing violence in her day-to-day life only nourishes her feelings of hatred and the urge to take revenge. She tells what she would do to Prime Minister Sharon if he visited the camp and she shouts that the Palestinians will never give up the struggle. They will keep on producing children - who can continue the fight against injustice. The sad question forces itself on the spectator. What will become of a country - a people when its children are confronted with war and violence from a very early age? Banned in Israel - ''Jenin Jenin'' is dedicated to Iyad Samudi - the producer of the film - who returned home to Yamun after the shooting of the film was completed. On June 23 - as Israeli forces besieged Yamun - Samudi was shot and killed as he was leaving a military-closed area with three friends.

What They Want Is My Silence - Said : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Edward Said Said talks about the Al-Aqsa intifada - the biased US media coverage and how the Holocaust is used as a weapon to intimidate critics of Israeli occupation and annexation policies. He describes the ongoing campaign to prevent him from publicly addressing Middle East issues and the scandalous behavior of the Freud Society of Vienna - which canceled an invitation for him to speak. What they want is my silence - he says - and as long as I'm alive - it's not going to happen. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2001) Edward Said - Columbia University professor - was born in Jerusalem - Palestine in 1935 and attended schools there and in Cairo. He received his BA from Princeton and his MA and PhD from Harvard. He is University Professor at Columbia. As one of the few advocates for Palestinian rights in the US - he has been the target of death threats and vandalism. In 1993 - he declined a White House invitation to attend the signing of the Oslo Accords. He criticized the agreement as an instrument of Palestinian surrender. An internationally renowned writer and scholar and one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era - he practically invented the field of post-colonial studies. The New York Times calls him one of the most influential literary and cultural critics in the world. Among his many books - which have been translated into a number of languages - are the now-classic Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism - central texts in colleges and universities all over the world - The Politics of Dispossession - The Question of Palestine - The End of the Peace Process and Reflections on Exile. Soapstone Vase from Kenya : GlobalExchange : US$32.00

Dimensions: 5 1/2'' height x 4'' base x 3'' rim diameter The soapstone (or kisii) used to create this product is found only in the Tabaka Hills of Western Kenya - a few kilometres southwest of Kisii town. A soft and easily worked stone - it comes in a variety of colors ranging from cream and lavender to black. From the quarries in Tabaka - the large blocks of stone are broken into smaller pieces using large knives (pangas) - before being carried off to the workshops - which can be several kilometres away. Craftsmen then cut out the rough shape of the carving with a knife - before carving out the detail using a small knife called a kisu. Following this - the carvings are polished with wet sand and cleaned with a small brush. Soapstone is technically a talc; the various colorations and striations running through it are formed by the leaching of different minerals through the stone as it sits underground (particularly iron). Craftspeople produce each piece without the help of any mechanical devices. There is no electric power supply in or near the villages - and the excavation of raw quarry stone - the carving work and polishing are all done manually.
