The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry - From Crop to the Last Drop : GlobalExchange : US$15.95

By Gregory Dicum and Nina Luttinger The Coffee Book is an engaging - informative look at one of the most popular products in the world. Jammed full of facts - figures - cartoons - and commentary - it covers coffee from its first use in Ethiopia in the sixth century AD to the dramatic rise of Starbucks and other specialty retailers in the 1990s. Written with verve and filled with revealing anecdotes and little-known facts - the book surveys the social history of cafe society from the first coffeehouses in Constantinople Renaissance French cafes to beatnik havens of Berkeley and Greenwich Village; explores the process of cultivation - harvesting and roasting from bean to cup; and tells the dramatic story of international trade and speculation for a product that can make or break entire national economies. The book also examines the industry?s major players - reveals how the quest for higher profits has often come at the expense of quality - and shows how a much-loved product has been turned into a lifestyle. Finally - The Coffee Book considers the exploitation that mass cultivation causes - and explores the growing ? conscious coffee? market and Fair Trade movement. Coffee With Pleasure: Just Java and World Trade : GlobalExchange : US$21.99

by Laure Waridel foreword by Maude Barlow Using the example of the world coffee trade - Laure Waridel shows how our current trading system perpetuates poverty and injustice - and explains how the alternative trading system known as Fair Trade can break the cycle of exploitation and environmental destruction. This book looks at the fair trade movement by examining the issues surrounding the production and trading of coffee. Using Mexico as an example - the conventional coffee trade is described - tracing the coffee bean's journey from the tree - through the hands of several intermediaries in both the North and South - to its final destination as a cup of coffee. The book then presents the Fair Trade concept through the example of a Mexican peasant organization which was one of the first to embrace the Fair Trade system - and which was also a pioneer in the production of organic coffee. The situation of Fair Trade in North America is also explored - providing comprehensive resources and references for anyone who wants to get involved - at any level. (173 pages - November 2001) Table of Contents Foreword by Maude Barlow Introduction: Making a Difference with Every Cup Chapter 1: The Global Context Chapter 2: Rebuilding Democracy Chapter 3: Coffee and its Hidden Costs Chapter 4: The Conventional Coffee Route Chapter 5: A Different Path for Coffee Growers Chapter 6: Consumer Power Conclusion: Holding Up the Stream of Inequity Appendix A: Fair Trade Certification Criteria Appendix B: Organic Coffee Certification Appendix C: Shade-Grown Coffee Appendix D: Moving into Action - Contact List Appendix E: Where to Get Fair Trade Coffee Bibliography Online References Index For more information - visit Global Exchange's Coffee campaign.

Challenging Corporate Power - Grossman : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Richard Grossman Once corporations got a foot in the door to power in the late 1890s - it took less than a century to buy the whole building and the ground it stands on. Corporate dominance of the public sphere and its growing presence in our private lives are increasingly viewed as simply the way things are--it's just business. When corporate power is challenged by public advocates and small grassroots efforts - they often find themselves up against the goliathan might of money and big media. In this interview - Grossman provides a historical context for legal and civil disobedient resistance to corporate power and discusses late-1990s efforts to defend the commonweal. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1998) Richard Grossman is a top expert on law and corporations. He directs the Program on Corporations - Law & Democracy and is author of Taking Care of Business.

Race: Creating a National Conversation - Guiner : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Lani Guinier The OJ Simpson trial and the Million Man March once again revealed not only the centrality of race - but its polarizing power. Public discourse is marked by recrimination and finger-pointing. Demagogic politicians and talk show hosts advance their agendas by playing what is called the race card. Crucial issues of equality and fairness are buried in media stereotypes. If race and the persistence of racism cannot be rationally discussed - the alternatives are ominous. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1995) Lani Guinier is an expert on representation and voting rights law. She served as legal counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In 1993 she was nominated by President Clinton to be Assistant Attorney General. After an orchestrated right-wing campaign to label her as a quota queen - Clinton withdrew the nomination. She teaches law at the University of Pennsylvania. Lani Guinier is a tenured professor at Harvard Law School - the first black woman to hold such a position.

Sanctions in Iraq: A Human Rights Catastrophe- Halliday : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Dennis Halliday The US and its allies supported Saddam Hussein during the 1980s. He fell quickly out of favor with his 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The result was the Gulf War and the imposition of sanctions. The human cost of these sanctions has been staggering. Millions of Iraqis are without food - clean water and medicine. At least 500 - 000 children have died from malnutrition and disease. Iraq's health care system - once one of the best in the region - is in shambles. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1998) Denis Halliday of Ireland worked for the United Nations for more than thirty years. He was the Humanitarian Coordinator for the UN in Iraq. He resigned his position in protest over the continuation of economic sanctions.

Money and Politics - Hightower : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Jim Hightower The golden rule of politics - to discover who rules - is to follow the money. The political system is awash in torrents of the green stuff. The spigot is on all the time. The fat cats and big corporations are equal opportunity givers. They give to both major parties. A grassroots movement to institute campaign finance reform is spreading across the country. This enormously funny and insightful program was recorded at a meeting of a coalition of citizens groups demanding campaign finance reform. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1996) Populist Jim Hightower has long been active in Texas politics. He is a witty - no-holds-barred commentator and the host of the Austin-based - nationally syndicated Chat 'N Chew radio show. He has little patience for what he calls Republicrats or Demopublicans. Neither liberal nor conservative - he roots himself in the populist tradition - and he loves to use humor as a political weapon. He is the author of There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road But Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos and If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote - They Would Have Given Us Candidates.

He has exposed the misdeeds of the corporate sector as well as of the political system. Ideas for Action: Relevant Theory for Radical Change : GlobalExchange : US$20.00

by Cynthia Kaufman From the Enron scandal to global warming - from the war on terrorism to the war on drugs - a growing number of people are unhappy with the status quo. Yet those genuinely interested in reading about the issues find that few contemporary theorists are seriously committed to accessible - clear writing. Furthermore - the mainstream media rarely represents social movements - and the theories associated with them - without distortion or bias. Written in an engaging and accessible style - Ideas for Action gives activists the intellectual tools to turn discontent into a plan of action. Exploring a wide range of political traditions?including Marxism - anarchism - anti-imperialism - poststructualism - feminism - critical race theory - and environmentalism?Cynthia Kaufman acknowledges the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of political movements and the ideologies inspired or generated through them. Kaufman incorporates elements of her own activist experiences - and offers a coherent analysis without pretending to offer the final word on complex issues. Instead - she encourages inquiry and further investigation - offering readers the information to orient a critical understanding of the social world and a glimpse of the excitement and rewards of serious intellectual engagement with political ideas. 332 pages - 2003)

Deadly Embrace: Nicaragua - the World Bank and the IMF : GlobalExchange : US$30.00

This project describes the current neo-liberal economic order as it embraces Nicaragua. The video combines outstanding footage of people's lives and their struggle to survive with a textbook-clear analysis - a country profile - maps - discussion topics - organizing activities - resources and photographs with personal stories told by Nicaraguans. The late twentieth century economic order has again placed Nicaragua at the mercy of its historical nemesis - the United States. (VHS - 30 minutes - 1999) One thing that makes this video so excellent is that you don't need to know a thing about Nicaragua. If you want to learn about how structural readjustment - the debt crises and free trade hurt the people and economies of the Third World - this is the video to watch. ? Chuck Kaufman - Nicaragua Network Educational Fund A powerful and entertaining documentary that effectively humanizes critical economic issues. ? David Wildman - The Boston Globe The big stick of the Pentagon and the CIA (in Nicaragua) has been replaced with an economic boa constrictor: unemployment. The sounds of helicopters and screaming have stopped - leaving the silence of hungry people and the weak cries of dying children. Nicaragua (in the 1980s) has scoffed at the old Latin American realities; in place of misery - food for all - healthcare for all - education for all - housing for all. Life for all. Now the vultures have come to roost. ? John Brentlinger - The Best of What We Are: Reflections of the Nicaraguan Revolution. Democratizing the Global Economy - Danaher : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Kevin Danaher In the wake of massive protests from Seattle to Bangalore - an international movement to democratize the global economy has emerged. What does it mean to democratize the global economy? It means moving capital investment decision-making from the secret realm of the wealthy few out into the light of public scrutiny and control. The word democracy implies that sovereignty - ultimate political authority - resides in the people - not in corporations. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2000) Kevin Danaher is co-founder of Global Exchange - the San Francisco-based non-profit organization that led the campaign that exposed Nike's use of sweatshop labor and promotes grassroots - citizen-oriented efforts in international trade. He is the author of Corporations Are Gonna Get Your Mama - 50 Years Is Enough - Globalize This! - and Democratizing the Global Economy.

Democratizing the Global Economy: The Battle Against the World Bank and the IMF : GlobalExchange : US$15.95

Edited by Kevin Danaher For half a century the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank -- two of the most powerful institutions on Earth -- operated in near-total secrecy. Now - an international grassroots movement is exposing these elite operations to the uncomfortably bright light of public scrutiny. In the 27 chapters of Democratizing the Global Economy - dozens of activists and educators examine the mounting protests against the World Bank and IMF - why these lenders have finally generated such heated opposition - and what the global justice movement proposes replacing them with in order to build a democratic economy. (221 pages - 2001) Authors include: Robert Naiman - How the IMF and World Bank policies lower wages and encouage sweatshops Anuradha Mittal - How structural adjustments are coming to the US Robert Weissman - How most debt relief programs have been little more than a PR stunt Fidel Castro - The need for poor nations to unite against corporate rule Terry Allen - Police brutality and recent government efforts to chill activism Naomi Klein - How criticism of prosecutors' lack of vision has often missed the point Njoki Njehu/Soren Ambrose - How the A16 protests were organized Many - many more... A special series from The World Summit on Sustainable Development - featuring: Ben Cashdan (Down to Earth Presenter) Anuradha Mittal (Co-Director - Institute for Food & Development Policy - Food First - California) Val Giddings (Vice President for Food & Agriculture - Biotechnology Industry Organization) Tewolde Egziabher (Institute for Sustainable Development - Ethiopia) Erhad Schwinne (Director General - Ministry for Consumer Protection - Food & Agriculture - Germany) The seed is the beginning of life. Cultivators respect the fragile harmony between seed and soil. But today we are facing a World Hunger Crisis. In Southern Africa - 13 million people confront extreme hunger. Does the solution lie in biotechnology? Or is control of the resources the issue? Europe and the US currently spend six times more subsidizing their farmers than they spend on Development Aid. Just as the Green Revolution created dependency on pricey fertilizers and pesticides - biotechnology might end up bolstering the profits of US multinationals at the expense of farmers in the South. Landless Movements are crying out - Give us the land you took from us during colonialism. We'll feed ourselves. How do we get do the bottom of this extreme form of violence waged through the stomach? What are the real benefits and dangers of biotechnology? Are world leaders prepared to face food inequality head on? (VHS - 50 miutes - 2002)

10 Reasons to Abolish the IMF and World Bank : GlobalExchange : US$6.95

By Kevin Danaher - (Co-founder of Global Exchange) Two of the most powerful institutions that have promoted the ''free market'' agenda of the large corporations are the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. This book gets at the root causes of the problems created by them and presents ten arguments for abolishing the World Bank and IMF - replacing them with democratic institutions that would make the global economy more accountable to an informed and active citizenry. We abolished slavery; we abolished Jim Crow laws; we abolished the exclusion of women from voting; we abolished the 60-hour work week; and we can abolish international banking institutions that do more to prevent democracy than promote it. If we are to have real democracy - then sovereignty must reside in the people themselves - not in institutions with limited public accountability. (104 pages - November 2001) Kevin travels the world speaking to community groups about the effects of corporate globalization and how to get involved in the grassroots movement challenging corporate rule. If you interested in having Dr. Danaher speak in your community or would like to know his speaking schedule - please contact our Speaker's Bureau. Another World is Possible: Conversations in a Time of Terror : GlobalExchange : US$12.00

Edited by Jee Kim - Jeremy Glick - Shaffy Moeel - Luis Sanchez - Beka Economopoulos - Walidah Imarisha In the first major collection of responses to September 11th - six twentysomethings from across the US (including one who lost his father in the World Trade Center) reflect on how the crisis has impacted their lives - explore the roots of anti-American terrorism - and offer concrete solutions for preventing future atrocities. Even when other anthologies are published - Another World is Possible: Conversations in a Time of Terror will stand alone among them - for the following reasons: Who is in It? Familiar voices such as Angela Davis - Deepak Chopra - Eduardo Galeano - Rebecca Walker - Barbara Kingsolver - Davey D - John Robbins - Rep. Barbara Lee - Aaron McGruder (Boondocks) - and Sebasti??o Salgado (photographer) are balanced with family members who lost loved ones; people who escaped alive and/or experienced anti-Middle Eastern scape-goating firsthand. Fresh Voices in the Conversation Another World is Possible speaks with fresh voices. More than 100 of them. Roughly half the contributors are people of color - half women - half emerging writers and activists under 30. They run the gamut from personal to political - practical to visionary - poetic to profound - funny to fierce. Who are the Editors? Beka Economopoulos volunteers at the Salvation Army and the Arab-American Family Support Center. Jeremy Glick teaches at Rutgers University and fields questions from students about what it was like to lose his father in the World Trade Center. Luis Sanchez works with youth in East LA who are happy for the first time not to be the targets of immigrant-bashing. Jee Kim is part of and works with immigrant communities of color in New York - one of the groups most devastated by 9/11 and least represented in media coverage of the tragedy. Walidah Imarisha grew up on military bases - resides in North Philly - and feels that living in a time of terror is nothing new. Shaffy Moeel watched the tragedy on TV from South Africa - where everyone wanted to know what she felt -as an American?? then returned to California to find she was more other than ever. What is the Book About? Another World is Possible begins with personal stories from September 11th. It follows with: Why did this happen? Analysis of US foreign policy in the Middle East - and the backlash against Arab-Americans and freedoms at home. And: Where do we go from here personally? Spiritually? In foreign policy? As a society? Much has been said about the necessity of stopping Al-Qaeda - the Taliban - and the Anthrax senders little about the role of the US military in training and funding these monsters - nor the likelihood that Bush's cowboy-style reaction will leave Americans even more vulnerable to future attacks. Contributors Tell Stories that have gone underreported in the media: The families of dead and displaced undocumented workers who were denied relief; the thousand plus detained and unexplained people; the profoundly unpatriotic 'Patriot Act'; Bush's insane energy policy; the ill-conceived sanctions on Iraq; the diversion of relief funds to corporate bailouts; and systematic silencing of those questioning the Washington war consensus. Artisans and Cooperatives : GlobalExchange : US$19.95

Edited by Kimberly M. Grimes and B. Lynne Milgram With new markets opening up for goods produced by artisans from all parts of the world - craft commercialization and craft industries have become key components of local economies. Now with the emergence of the Fair Trade movement and public opposition to sweatshop labor - many people are demanding that artisans in third world countries not be exploited for their labor. Bringing together case studies from the Americas and Asia - this timely collection of articles addresses the interplay among subsistence activities - craft production - and the global market. It contributes to current debates on economic inequality by offering practical examples of the political - economic - and cultural issues surrounding artisan production as an expressive vehicle of ethnic and gender identity. Striking a balance between economic and ethnographic analyses - the contributors observe what has worked and what hasn't in a range of craft cooperatives and show how some artisans have expanded their entrepreneurial role by marketing crafts in addition to producing them. Among the topics discussed are the accommodation of craft traditions in the global market - fair trade issues - and the emerging role of the anthropologist as a proactive agent for artisan groups. As the gap between rich and poor widens - the fate of subsistence economies seems more and more uncertain. The artisans in this book show that people can and do employ innovative opportunities to develop their talents - and in the process strengthen their ethnic identities. ''No other books that I know of address this newly exciting and current issue of Fair Trade.'' ? Joan Gero - American University ''Extremely significant . . . will be a breakthrough volume in economic anthropology and economics in general.'' ? Stanton Green - Clarion University Kimberly M. Grimes is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Delaware in Georgetown and Director of Made By Hand International Cooperative in Bethany - Delaware. She is also the author of Crossing Borders: Changing Social Identities in Southern Mexico. B. Lynne Milgram teaches anthropology at the University of Toronto and is a research associate at the Royal Ontario Museum. Her articles on the commercialization of Philippine crafts have appeared in the journals Museum Anthropology and Research in Economic Anthropology. Prospects for Peace in the Middle East : GlobalExchange : US$10.00

Hanan Ashrawi The adjective most often used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is intractable. Ancient hatreds - the experts tell us - make it impossible for the two peoples to live in peace. Peace - peace - peace is chanted like a mantra by both parties. Yet what is preventing it from being realized? For decades - there has been an almost unanimous international consensus on solving the problem. UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 are the foundations for a settlement. Two countries have consistently opposed the implementation of those resolutions: Israel and the United States. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2002) Hanan Ashrawi - distinguished academic and political activist - served from 1996-98 as Minister of Education under the Palestinian Authority. She was educated at the American University at Beirut - and got her Ph.D. in comparative literature at the University of Virginia. With her many media appearances and public talks - she's one of the most well-known representatives of the Palestinian viewpoint. A special series from The World Summit on Sustainable Development - featuring: Ben Cashdan (Down to Earth Presenter) Piers Cross (World Bank Water & Sanitation Programme - Africa) Vandana Shiva (Research Foundation for Science - Technology and Ecology - New Delhi) Mike Muller (Director General - Department of Water Affairs & Forestry - South Africa) Patrick Apoya (Community Partners in Health & Development - Ghana) Our bodies are 70% water. Three quarters of our planet is covered by water. Yet while water may be plentiful - unless every one of us has clean fresh water in our homes every day - we perish. At least 7 million South Africans have no running water at all. In some parts of Alexandra township - dozens of residents share one yard tap. Across the world - a billion people live without access to a safe water supply. Africa is the worst served continent. The World Bank has argued that everyone must pay for water to prevent wastage. Private water provision also relies on selling water. This is a lucrative proposition for the three or four firms which dominate the global water and wastewater market - which will soon be worth a trillion dollars. Is there a role for private water companies and multinationals - in water provision? Should governments subsidize water for the poor - and even provide it for free? Can we ensure that everybody in the world has enough clean water in their homes to lead a healthy and dignified life. (VHS - 50 miutes - 2002)

As they left they declared - We - the representatives of the peoples of the world - reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development. We commit ourselves to build a humane - equitable and caring global society. The departing summiteers - who spent $55 million dollars on the largest ever United Nations gathering - left behind them the same contradictions which scar post-apartheid South Africa - and the world. During the World Summit - we focused on food - water and energy ?? the basic resources which keep us alive. We brought into our studio key players from business - government and civil society. In this special program - we revisit those debates - and we ask the question:what did the summit really achieve? And we speak to South African Trade minister Alec Irwin and Environment minister Mohammed Valli Moosa. We also talk to two protest leaders - Trevor Ngwane and Dennis Brutus - as well as Mohua Pheko - of the Gender Network on Trade in Africa. Can world summits provide access to food - water and energy. Can meetings of world leaders deliver social justice. Was the World Summit a good deal for Africa. We leave that to you to decide. (VHS - 50 miutes - 2002)

Dear President Bush : GlobalExchange : US$5.95

An edited transcript of a day-long interview conducted with Cindy Sheehan by Open Media pamphlet co-founder Greg Ruggiero. There's certainly never been a better time to resurrect the pamphlet series. And there's perhaps never been a better author to rush out there. ''...I interviewed Cindy about her personal journey - Martin Luther King - Jr. - social change - and how the senseless killing of her son Casey triggered a prairie fire within her that spread to Crawford - Texas - and from there to the rest of the nation. Peace advocate - movement leader - passionate speaker - nonviolent resister - inspired writer - Cindy Sheehan is all of these things. But after spending last Monday with her - I realised that above and beyond all else - Cindy is a Mother. Not just a Mother - but Mom Laureate - Subcommandante Momus - Nobel Peace Mom - Dr. Mom - Jr. - Mahatma Momdi - National Mom - World Mom - Milky Way Mom. Which is to say - Casey's Mom. Cindy summons and delivers a message from the unbearable anguish a parent suffers when their child dies before their time. ..Until she hears the shouts of joy when the last U.S. soldier returns home from occupied soil - she is not going to stop. The pamphlet in your hands is her voice. If you listen you can hear the Roar. If you listen - you can hear your name being called out to get involved. This pamphlet is dangerous. It's a spark that can start prairie fires. Please use it.'' [from the 'Letter To The Reader' by Greg Ruggiero]
