Oware table game, 'Dua Korkor' : Novica : USD54.95

Patiently carved, it is finished with linseed oil and wax. The game board is complemented with shiny beads made of recycled, non-toxic light-weight plastic. Oware is a game of skill and strategy designed for two players, challenging mental agility and alertness. It can be played by children as young as four years old, yet the game remains highly competitive among adults. The objective can be briefly described as "counting and capturing beads" and there are no chance factors in it. The player's strategy entirely depends upon the ability for reasoning and counting. Oware is one of the oldest games in the world. The earliest records describing the game were found in Arab religious texts dating to the Middle Ages, believing the game originated in the Middle East and spread from there to Africa, then to Asia with Arab traders, and to the Caribbean around 1640 via the African slave trade. Other experts place its origins in Central Africa; the Masai state that oware was invented by Sindillo, the son of the first man, Maitoumbe, and was originally called geshe. In Arab countries, the most common name for this game is mancala (Arabic word meaning "to move"). In some West African countries the depressions in the board are referred to as warri or wwari, which means houses, thus name owari. In Nigeria it is known as adi, which is also the name of the seeds used to play it; and in South Africa it is called ohoro. With different and exotic names such as congklak, dakon, aggalacang and nogarata it has also been played in Asia long before the Portuguese rounded the southern tip of Africa. Today, Mancala represents the diversity of Africa, as some version of it is played in nearly every African country. Legend relates that Shyaam aMbul aNgoong, founder of the Kuba kingdom of Central Africa taught the game to his people to encourage foresight and calculation. Having transcended the passing of the centuries, Mancala has been enjoyed as a family game, a ceremonial right of passage, or as a form of recreation among friends. It would be hard to find a greater challenge of ethnomathematics, or a more attractive introduction to arithmetic! The set includes a detailed playing manual. Care instructions: The piece should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

Lacquered bamboo bowl, 'Orbits' : Novica : USD59.95

As if caught in an underwater orbit, whirlpools of red invade the deep dark backdrop of this conical footed bowl. Unpredictable, yet ordered, the piece offers a spectacular Thai accent to the home dcor. For decorative purposes only; not intended to hold water. Hand-crafted by Daeng Thanunchai. To complete this piece, coiled bamboo basketry is firstly carved on a lathe into the desired shape. A mixture of lacquer - obtained from the Gluta usitata tree - and ashes of burnt rice paddy husks is then applied to the object. Upon exposure to air the mixture dries to form a watertight seal that is polished before another coat is applied. This process is repeated until a rigid base is formed, and a final polishing is executed with sandpaper. Then several coats of pure lacquer are painted on the object, with drying periods in between each coat. The work is partially polished with sandpaper according to a predetermined pattern - generally concentric - and a few coats of different lacquer colors are applied to the surface and the object is left to dry for a few days. The process remains identical for each ensuing color, alternating lacquering and polishing sessions until the design is achieved. The final coat is washed with water and polished with powdered fired clay, offering an irresistible sheen.

Wood djembe drum, 'Baule Mask' : Novica : USD237.95

Ernestina Oppong skillfully crafts this drum, its visual rhythm an inherent complement to the instrument's perfected resonance. Along the base she engraves traditional masks of the Baule people, further accentuating the piece's cultural allure. The djembe originates from the nation of Benin in West Africa, where it is used during voodoo rituals, but has now been incorporated into the music of neighboring countries. Oppong combines a passion for carving with music, resulting in traditional instruments with contemporary flair. Tweneboa, a kind of hardwood, provides the body for the drum, its golden tone highlighting the engaging designs. Oppong applies shoe and mansion polish to enhance the wood's smooth, radiant appearance. Iron rod rings are attached to the mouth of the drum and wrapped with cotton to prevent rusting. Through these rings, nylon ropes are double-woven, securely fastening the African pygmy goatskin to the wood. To play, sit on the edge of a chair with ankles crossed, the top of the drum fitting neatly between the knees as the base of the drum rests behind the heels. This way the drum is angled away from the body. Sitting up straight with hands resting on the drum's playing surface, the wrists should become flat and the drummer will be in position to create the standard djembe sounds. Djembes produce three basic sounds: bass, tone, and slap. BASS: With the hand flat and fingers together, place the hand at the dimension of two fists above the center of the playing surface. Allow the hand to strike and bounce back to the original position above the center. TONE: This is the high-pitched sound produced by striking the top surface nearest the edge with firmly placed fingers. SLAP: Strike the playing surface's edge first with the heel of your hand, and then allow your fingers to naturally bounce down towards the drum's center
